When I think of summer, I always think of the 90s. School’s out, AC blasting in the car, trying to catch The Cranberries on the radio. And when I think of summer in the 90’s, the first thing I think about is the movies. Well, the real first thing I think about is the time that lady yelled at me when I was watching The Client in the movie theater. I was 13 and just trying to enjoy Brad Renfro while pretending I was Susan Sarandon, which was a complicated dynamic enough for a 13 year old without some lady who was probably the age I am now yelling at me. But then I always think about the movies. Which brings me to…..
…..Rom Com Summer Movie Club! Each week will be something different. Some weeks we’ll have live watch parties where we can cozy up, grab a popsicle, open the window because the AC is on the fritz, and watch a movie together! Other weeks will look like….
A My So Called Life pilot watch party and who was your first crush writing prompt!
A fun writing exercise to flush out ideas for scripts, scenes or essays. Like what’s your movie MASH?! Where we do each other’s rom com themed MASH and write a scene, outline or prose based off of it.
A book club-esque get together, where we watch a movie and talk about why Jennifer Anniston did that to her hair while doing a generative writing prompt based on the movie!
A write your script as a 90’s movie soundtrack (because they were the best soundtracks let’s just get over it.) Who’s on the cover? What are the scenes as song titles? And yes, of course, we can listen to the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack while we write. What would even be the point if we couldn’t.
You can pay by the month or drop in! We’ll be like Bonnie Hunt’s women’s group in Jerry Maguire except not sad and maybe more gossipy.
Rom Com Movie Club - not to be mistaken for Fight Club, where you can and should talk about this - starts in June! We’ll meet for about 2 hours - if it’s a watch party it might be a bit longer. $125 for the month or $35 to drop in.
Email me at avstanczak@gmail.com if you’re interested and I’ll pick a date and time that works for best for everyone!
For now I'll leave you with this...
