Like Kate Winslet’s 78 year old neighbor/best friend/potential love interest says to her in The Holiday, “you’re supposed to be the leading lady of your own life, for God’s sake!”
I consider myself a rom com expert at this point. Having run my all things rom-com Instagram account and podcast for 4 years, Female Apartments from 90s Movies. Digesting every 90’s rom com as a kid and re-digesting them as an adult with the realization that yes I can love an overstuffed ottoman and still call out out the misogyny that 90’s movies bestowed to us. So why don’t I see if anyone wants to watch rom coms, talk about love, be nostalgic and learn how to write the perfect rom com that comes from deep inside their soul!
For all women, men and non-binary, this class will give you the opportunity to self reflect and draw upon your own love lives and write your perfect rom com script.
What you’ll get!
A 6 week class where we’ll go over the story beats, tone, character, world building and dialogue that make up a great rom com
A weekly in class, rom-com writing prompt that draws from your own life to get your creative juices flowing
Walking away with a finished outline from which to write your script
Your homework will be to watch rom coms and fall in love? Or at the very least get over your shitty ex.
I mean think about it…all the great rom com characters are WRITERS. Like Jennifer Aniston in Picture Perfect, she wrote about mustard! Or Andie Anderson, she wrote a very important piece about the fictional country of Tajikistan! (And then later went on to write about how to lose a guy in 10 days which honestly makes no sense, why would anyone want to do that. She should have just stuck to Tajikistan)
In each class I’ll pull from specific rom com scripts and clips to showcase the elements that make it the genre you love. Elements such as world building. Are you a NYC rom com or an indie Minnesota rom com? And tone. Are you a You’ve Got Mail or a True Romance rom com?
During our class/slumber party you’ll ask yourself the hard hitting rom com questions like, are you in an Indie Rom Com? Or a friend Rom Com? A holiday rom com? A teen rom com? A rom dram?? A sci-fi romcom? (yes, this is a genre)
Is your best friend Rupert Everett? Or Bonnie hunt? Are you a Meg or a Salma? A John Cusack??
When you have an outline you are more than halfway there to writing your script. You’ll have the blueprint. You’ll know the characters, the world, the story that you want to tell.
This will be a fun and fulfilling journey where you’ll learn not only how to write a rom com but how to write about yourself!
Class Times:
Saturdays starting May 11th 11am - 1pm PST/ 2pm-4pm EST
Thursdays starting May 9th 7pm - 9pm PST/ 10pm-12am EST
Cost is $200 for 6 weeks
Private, one on one session to bring focus to your story ideas, troubleshoot any area of your script, characters, beat sheet and brainstorm $100
Individual full script reading with notes and punch ups, along with a 1.5 hour session to go over it $350
